On May 8, 2025, history was made as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, a milestone that resonates deeply within the global Catholic community.
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost pursued his religious vocation early in life. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University in 1977 and later studied theology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. His commitment to the Church led him to the Order of St. Augustine, where he professed his solemn vows.
Prevost’s dedication took him to Peru, where he served extensively as a missionary and later as the Bishop of Chiclayo. His work in Peru not only deepened his pastoral experience but also led to his naturalization as a Peruvian citizen, highlighting his profound connection to the region. In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a significant role within the Vatican that underscored his leadership and commitment to the Church’s mission.
Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the College of Cardinals convened in a conclave to elect a new pope. On the second day of deliberations, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pontiff. Cardinal Prevost was introduced to the world as Pope Leo XIV, stepping onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to deliver his first address, emphasizing peace, unity, and the continuation of the Church’s outreach to marginalized communities.
The choice of the name “Leo XIV” is a nod to Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of workers’ rights and social justice through the encyclical “Rerum Novarum.” By adopting this name, Pope Leo XIV signals a commitment to addressing contemporary social issues and continuing the Church’s engagement with the modern world.
Pope Leo XIV’s election represents a significant moment for the Catholic Church, reflecting its evolving global nature and the increasing diversity within its leadership. His unique background as an American-born, Peruvian-naturalized citizen with extensive missionary experience positions him to bridge cultural divides and lead the Church into a new era of inclusivity and outreach.
